  • What is cellulose insulation made from?

Cellulose insulation is primarily made from recycled paper products, usually newspaper, which is treated with non-toxic fire retardants like borate to enhance safety and pest resistance.

  • Is cellulose insulation environmentally friendly?

Yes. Cellulose is one of the greenest insulation options available. It contains up to 85% recycled content and has a low embodied energy compared to other materials like fiberglass or foam.

  • How is cellulose insulation installed?

    It can be installed as:

    • Loose-fill/blown-in: Typically blown into attics or wall cavities using a machine.
    • Dense-pack: Blown into walls under pressure to prevent settling.
    • Spray-applied wet: A moist version used in new construction to adhere to cavities before drywall is installed.
  • How does cellulose compare to other types of insulation?

Cellulose typically has an R-value of about R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch, which is comparable or better than fiberglass. It also provides better air sealing when dense-packed and offers excellent soundproofing.

  • Is cellulose insulation fire safe?

Yes. Despite being made from paper, cellulose insulation is treated with fire-retardant chemicals that give it a Class 1 fire rating.

  • Will cellulose insulation settle over time?

Loose-fill cellulose may settle slightly, but modern dense-pack and stabilized methods minimize settling significantly. Proper installation is key to preventing issues.

  • Can cellulose insulation help with soundproofing?

Yes. Cellulose insulation is denser than many other types and is very effective at reducing airborne sound transmission between rooms and floors.

  • Is cellulose insulation safe for people with allergies?

Generally, yes. Cellulose is treated to resist mold, insects, and fire, and it doesn’t contain fiberglass particles that can irritate skin or lungs. Still, sensitive individuals should consult an expert.

  • How long does cellulose insulation last?

If properly installed and kept dry, cellulose insulation can last 30 years or more without losing effectiveness.

  • Can cellulose insulation be used in old homes?

Absolutely. Cellulose is often used in retrofits for older homes because it can be blown into existing walls without major renovations.

  • Is cellulose insulation rodent or insect resistant?

Yes. The borate treatment used in cellulose acts as a deterrent to most insects and rodents.

  • Is cellulose insulation resistant to mold and moisture?

Cellulose is treated to resist mold, but like all insulation, it must be kept dry.

  • What type of insulation is best for my home?

The best insulation depends on your home’s structure, local climate, and energy efficiency goals. Common types include fiberglass, spray foam, cellulose, and rigid foam board.

  • How much does home insulation cost?

Costs vary based on insulation type, square footage, and accessibility of the space (e.g., attic vs. crawl space). We offer free estimates to give you an accurate price for your project.

  • Will insulation really save me money on energy bills?

Yes! Proper insulation can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20% or more by keeping your indoor temperature more stable year-round.

  • How do I know if my home needs more insulation?

Signs include drafty rooms, uneven temperatures, high energy bills, or an HVAC system that runs constantly. A home energy audit or insulation inspection can help determine your needs.

  • Can I add new insulation over old insulation?

In many cases, yes. As long as the old insulation is dry and in good condition, it can remain in place under new layers to improve performance.

  • How long does insulation installation take?

Most insulation projects can be completed in 1 to 2 days, depending on the size of the area and the type of insulation being installed.

  • Is spray foam insulation safe for my family and pets?

Yes, once cured, spray foam insulation is safe and inert. We follow strict safety protocols during installation to ensure proper ventilation and safe application.

  • What areas of my home should be insulated?

Key areas include the attic, walls, floors above crawl spaces, basements, and around doors/windows. Proper insulation in these areas maximizes comfort and energy savings.

  • Does insulation help with soundproofing?

Yes, certain types of insulation—especially cellulose and fiberglass—can significantly reduce noise transfer between rooms and from outside.
